Floating museum of deep sea fishing

In the fishing harbour of Bremerhaven, you can discover the last surviving German side trawler. The only floating museum of deep sea fishing gives a fascinating insight into a world of work that does not exist anymore.

The „GERA“ was built in 1959/60 in the Peene Shipyard in Wolgast and was commisioned for the Rostock Fishing Combine until 1990. On this 66-metre long outpost of the Historisches Museum Bremerhaven time stood still over 50 years ago. From the trawl net on the fishing deck to the saucepans in the galley and the captain’s uniform in his cabin – everything is still in its right place.

Exhibitions in the net room and the hold as well as five multimedia stations with films, series of photographs and illustrated information give an authentic idea of the history and the arduous world of work of deep sea fishing. Captain Hein and his bosun Harry explain the ship at 17 stations of a multimedia guide. The two deep sea fishermen’s humorous conversation can be received via your own smartphone or a tablet that can be borrowed on board.
