"Adler von Krautsand" - Sailing ship
A traditional ship
The Frisian Sprietsegel-Schmack is a typical East Frisian cargo ship from the 18th century. Its shallow draft and flat bottom made it possible for it to transport peat in particular, right into the shallow channels. Lateral centerboards give the Schmack stability.
The "Gesine von Papenburg" is a replica, constructed according to old captain's pictures and models at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg. Today, the city on the Ems is primarily known for building large luxury cruise liners - but the "Gesine von Papenburg" will continue to sail actively to commemorate the maritime and cultural heritage of Papenburg and its region.
