Welcome to the SAIL Bremerhaven 2020

The International Windjammer Festival from 19th - 23rd August 2020

1986. 1990. 1992. 1995. 2000. 2005. 2008. 2010.2015.  "Sail Bremerhaven" has long become an international institution in a city and region that is traditionally and historically closely connected with ships and sail.

More than 250 great ocean-going sailing vessels were built between 1840 and 1926 at the Rickmers and the Joh. C. Tecklenborg shipyards. And the great sail-training ships like the "Kruzenshtern" (formerly the "Padua"), or the "Statsraad Lehmkuhl" (formerly the "Grossherzog Friedrich August") are still sailing nowadays. Not to mention the barque "Alexander von Humboldt II", which has been Bremerhaven‘s ambassador afloat in the international community of the tall ships and sail training since 2011.

But "Sail Bremerhaven" is also, and above all, an expression of the identity of the greatest city on the German North Sea Coast, which has drawn its existence for more than 180 years from shipbuilding, nautical trading, and the commerce generated by its harbor. The exploration of the seas and the poles of our Earth, the research into the German and European nautical history or the authentic preservation of the cultural maritime inheritance also nowadays belong to the great tasks of the city, which is now, for the tenth time since 1986, the host for the International Windjammer Festival "Sail Bremerhaven".

And it is a good tradition that on the 19th – 23rd August, 2020 the government of the Federal Republic of Germany and of the State of Bremen, together with the City of Bremerhaven, on their part again invite the international community of sailing people on the large and small windjammers, on the ocean-going yachts, and on the tradition-rich ships to the seaport of Bremerhaven - a city that has made great changes in its appearance in the past years and has developed into a maritime center for research, high technology, culture and maritime tourism.
