„The last step“: The Emigrate Memorial of 1998
In front of the Bremerhaven College for Applied Sciences there is a seven meter long and seven meter high walk-in brick cube, which was designed by the Russian object artist Ilja Kabakov as the emigrant memorial „The last Step". It was inaugurated on October 19,1998 and commemorates the former function of the emigrant boarding house (now integrated into the college grounds) which was built in 1849. Inside you will find a wall panorama with associations of the emigrant ships of the past.
