New Harbor
Havenwelten and maritime history
Flagship of the New Harbor is the Havenwelten Bremerhaven (Harbor Worlds) with the Klimahaus® Bremerhaven 8º Ost, lookout platform SAIL City, MEIN Outlet & Shopping-Center, Lloyd Marina, German Emigration Center Bremerhaven, Zoo at the Sea, Simon-Loschen-Lighthouse and the harbor cruise offers.
The New Harbor is especially in the summer months a favorite location for big events such as the Sail. Then the harbor basin, which is also a dock space for the historical museum ships, becomes a guest harbor for the many visiting windjammers from all over the world. Aside from the modern and innovative offers there are also numerous maritime orientated historical sites and attractions
Initial maritime importance
The main shipping company on the Lower Weser River, the North German Lloyd, was the primary user of the New Harbor in the first centuries. Preserved buildings such as the Strandhalle, dry dock, bascule bridges and machine houses located between the Old and New Harbor are witnesses of that time.
Old Lighthouse (built by Simon Loschen)
With the building of the New Harbor it became necessary to erect a beacon on the lock to the harbor entrance. In 1853 the famous architect from Bremen Simon Loschen (1818-1902) was assigned this task. Loschen was considered one of the big protagonists of Neo Gothic architecture in North Germany. Some of his other works are the Bürgermeister-Smidt-Gedächtniskirche (1855)(Mayor Smidt Memorial Church) in the city center of Bremerhaven and the water tower in the city park in Leher (1853).
Minaret
As a front light for the old lighthouse which was built by Simon Loschen in 1854, a 22,40 meter high lighthouse in a steel frame structure was built in 1893 on the south side of the entrance to the New Harbor. This building, which is now listed as a historic landmark, has retained its function as a beacon.
Semaphore
A semaphore is an optical wind indicator, two 4,5 meter long indicators describe the wind direction, six 1,5 meter long indicators show the wind force 1-12. Every two hours the German weather service gives out the current wind data for Borkum and Heligoland, which are displayed by the semaphore.
