City Theater

Musical theater, drama, ballet and concerts - in the heart of the city

In 1867, the Bremerhaven Municipal Theater was founded as a multi-specialty theater. On October 1, 1911, the Stadttheater on Theodor-Heuss-Platz - built to designs by Berlin architect Oskar Kaufmann - opened with a celebratory performance of William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." In 1944, a bombing raid destroyed the building except for the facade. From 1945, performances continued in the Leher Bürgerhaus as a makeshift solution, but reconstruction began as early as 1950. Thanks to numerous donations from the citizens of Bremerhaven, the reopening was celebrated on April 12, 1952. In 1999/2000, extensions and renovations were carried out. Since then, the house has been equipped with state-of-the-art stage technology as well as contemporary workshops and rehearsal stages on site.

Artistically, the municipal theater receives honors time and again. Among other things, it was awarded the Federal Theater Prize in 2015 and named one of the best theaters away from the centers by the trade magazine Die Deutsche Bühne in 2016. In 2023, an opera production of the Stadttheater will be nominated for the German theater award DER FAUST.

Each season, a broad repertoire of musical theater, drama, ballet, young theater and the Low German stage "Waterkant" as well as concerts by the Bremerhaven Philharmonic Orchestra can be experienced in the Großes Haus (685 seats) and Kleines Haus (120 seats) venues as well as in the JUB (Junges Theater Bremerhaven, 85 seats). In addition, the theater frequently plays other venues in Bremerhaven's neighborhoods.

Since 2023, the City Theater has organized the "Summer Stage in front of the City Theater Bremerhaven" in cooperation with the Cultural Office and neighboring cultural institutions. For five weeks each year, it offers a program of theater, readings, concerts and performances, among other things.
