The Kennedy Bridge

Bascule bridge from 1961

The bascule bridge part of the Columbus Street, which runs between the city and the "Havenwelten Bremerhaven" (Harbor Worlds), is named after the famous US President. The Kennedy Bridge is an electrically operated street bascule bridge and was built from 1960 to 1961. She received her present name in January 1964. The construction was named after the US-President John F. Kennedy, who was killed in November 1963, and was also very popular in Germany.
Underneath the bridge there is a flood barrier for flood and even storm surge defense. The flood barrier was completed just in time. Already one year after completion there was a severe storm surge in February 1962. The flood barrier passed its first true test and prevented flooding in the majority of the city center.

For the shipyards, which at the time were located upstream the bascule bridge construction was necessary. Today the bridge is rarely opened.
