North Lock
Even today the landmark lock offers even big ships enough room
The lock chamber of the North Lock which was opened in 1931 has a length of 372 meters, a passage width of 45 meters, and a waterway depth of 14,70 meters. The mighty sliding doors are electrically operated. The three Bauhaus style powerhouses with a clinker construction are declared historical monuments and were restored in 2003. At the time of its construction the North Lock was considered one of the world's largest lock facilities. Due to its size it still meets today's requirements for the large automobile transporters and other types of ships, which pass through day after day with the help of the harbor tug boats.
