Landing Place Swinging Bridge
Largest Railway Swing Bridge in Germany
Arriving at the swing bridge at the North Lock one is standing in front of the largest railway swing bridge in Germany. It is an important link between the railway and the Columbus train station. It was built between 1928 and 1930 as part of the extensive harbor expansion measures. The steel and riveted bridge has a length of 111,9 meters, two railway tracks, a two lane street, a pedestrian walkway and can be turned in about seven minutes, to let automobile transporters or repair ships from the Lloyd shipyard pass through.
Due to operational and security reasons, the general public is not allowed to enter the container terminal, for this reason the container lookout platform was built. The 12,50 meter high and 78 m² large lookout platform stands on a supporting frame and twelve containers and offers a unique vivid impression of everyday life in a modern container terminal and also allows you to observe the locking of ships through the North Lock.
