Fishery Harbor - Double Lock
A bottleneck vanishes - New lock for bigger ships.
The past showed that the Double Lock, which was built 1921 to 1925, had increasingly become a bottleneck for ships sailing to the Fishery Harbor. Therefore, in June 1996 the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen decided to build a new, much bigger main chamber.
After a construction period of four years the big chamber, elongated from 100 to 181 meters, was opened in June 2001. The first ship to pass the new lock was the trawler "Jan Maria" with a lenght of 124 meters. The small chamber kept its width but was correspondingly lengthened.
Through the extension of the Fishery Harbor Double Lock a bottleneck has been resolved. The building secures the access to a 600 hectares maritime area for commercial and industrial use with several hundred companies and several thousand jobs.
