Emperor's Lock
The Emperor's Lock is a ship sluice in the Overseas Harbors of Bremerhaven
Even then it was considered to be the world's largest watergate construction.
The old Emperor's Lock was built in 1892, in order to accommodate the expanding liner service of the North German Lloyd (NDL) with enough harbor capacity. Even then it was considered to be the world's largest watergate construction. In order to accommodate today's ship sizes, for example the automobile transporters, a further expansion of the Emperor's Lock to a length of 305 meters and a width 55 meters began.
The 305 meters long and 55 meters wide Emperor's Lock was festively opened. On the occasion of the inauguration of the Emperor's Lock on May 1st, 2011 the attempt to set a maritime world record began. 327 motorboats, accompanied by windjammers and theme ships, broke the world record. The world's longest sport boat parade led to an entry into the Guinness World Records.
The biggest automobile transporters can pass through the new lock. It is an important component, which will allow Bremerhaven to remain one of Europe's most important automobile transshipment hubs in the future.
