Bascule Bridge between the Old Harbor and New Harbor

The landmark bascule bridges with clinker-style powerhouses typical of that time are an important entrance to the "Havenwelten Bremerhaven" (Harbor Worlds) today.

The bascule bridges with clinker-style powerhouses typical of that time connect the Old Harbor to the New Harbor. Before this the harbor basins were not connected to one another. The connecting canal was only built between 1926 and 1928. Instead a lock connected the Old Harbor with the River Geeste estuary. One of the bridges was originally planned as a railway crossing, which is evident through the inlaid tracks. The wider of the two bridges served from the very beginning the street traffic and today is an important entrance to the „Havenwelten Bremerhaven". The landmark ensemble was refurbished during the mid 1980ties.
