The association was founded in 1886 and has been a guarantee for exhibitions and events in the area of plastic arts for more than 115 years. Today, the Art Association Bremerhaven has approximately 600 members. With the City Art Gallery Bremerhaven, it has its own exhibition hall since 1964. Since then, more than 300 exhibitions have been presented here. In six to nine changing exhibitions per year, the Art Association offers young artists the space to carry out topical artistic experiments beyond commercial interests and validated art-historical positions. Many nationally and internationally renowned artists have exhibited early in their careers in Bremerhaven. In addition to exhibitions of contemporary art, the association also organizes exhibitions dealing with the history of architecture and literature or exhibitions on classical, art-historical subjects from 19th-century painting to the art of the present.
Since 7th October 2007 has the Kunstverein Bremerhaven of 1886 e.V. its own Museum of Art.
