Round way river Geeste
On the round way from the center to Geestemünde and back
The flat route begins in the heart of the city in the ferry street with a view of the green bridge, the Old Geeste Bridge. In 1904 it replaced the older swing bridge from 1858, which had been built on the site of the earlier ferry that used to operate here in 1824.
Go left behind the small house in front of the bridge. A footbridge leads over to the paved sand path along the Geeste. The 42.5 kilometer long Geeste is the northernmost tributary of the Weser. Following the bend of the river, the grounds of the Marine Operation School (MOS) can be seen on the other side of the river. You pass the Unterweser Canoe Club and head towards a large green crane. The 36.5 meter high shipyard crane belonged to one of the leading shipyards, Rickmers Werft, which was located here until 1986.
On the left, the building of the Employment Agency and a day care center for children tower up before you pass the Captain's Quarter with its Mediterranean-colored houses. On the right, cross the green pedestrian bridge, the Achgelis Bridge, and continue straight ahead. Martin Achgelis took over an iron foundry in 1865 and expanded it to a machine factory that produced ship-technical machines such as anchor winches, ship pumps, steering machines and more.
You pass the gate of the Marine Operation School, where marines are trained on land for the operations center on board. Every year, some 4,000 naval students attend around two hundred courses. Continue along the MOS grounds to your right and you will come to Schulstraße. At the end of this street turn right into Ludwigstraße. On the right side you will pass Claussenstraße (do not turn off). This is where the successful Tecklenburg shipyard was located until 1928, whose director was the Bremerhaven shipbuilder Georg Claussen. Continue straight on, crossing the Alte Geestebrücke bridge, and you will again reach the starting point of the circular route.
