Hiking trail eastern Bremerhaven
Along the river Geeste via Reinkenheide to Publik Park
The nine-kilometer route begins on the bridge next to the Stadthalle/Eisarena in Stresemannstraße. Except for the crossing of the freeway, the route is level.
Look east, the river Geeste is on your left, and turn left onto "Zur Hexenbrücke" down to the Geeste dyke. You will pass the tidal barrier from 1960 on your left and the path leads over a small gravel parking lot directly to the Geeste bank with the boat clubs on the opposite side. The 42.5 kilometer long river Geeste is a tributary of the river Weser and serves as an river Elbe-Weser shipping route for smaller boats. To your right, the chimney of the Bremerhaven waste disposal company rises high before you cross under the freeway in front of you.
On the other side you will see impressive wind turbines. You follow the road straight ahead, the river Geeste on your left, trees and meadows on your right. Let your eyes wander over the flat landscape. You will reach the Schiffdorf barrage lock. This sluice is the oldest tidal barrier in the river Geeste and was built between 1890 and 1892 and was shut down in 1967. Turn right here and enjoy the wide view over the meadows.
Turn right at the second street. The meadows alternate with trees. Turn left at the end into "Reinkenheide" and follow the road to the end. There you cross "Weg 66" and "Weg 67" and go into "Taxusstraße". When you reach the end, the street "Johann-Wichels-Weg" rises slightly to the right. Here you cross the freeway and reach the Bürgerpark. The road changes into the "Adolf-Hoff-Weg". DO NOT follow this at the bend, but continue straight ahead on the paved, wide sandy path. Turn left at the high fountain. You will reach the exit of Public park. Follow the "Bismarckstraße" in front of you until you reach the "Friedrich-Ebert-Straße". Turn left into this street and after a few meters you will reach the bus stops.
If you travel by public transport, you can reach the starting point with the Bremerhaven bus lines 503 and 507, bus stop "Stadthalle". The destination is the Public park exit on Bismarckstraße. Follow this exit straight ahead until you reach Friedrich-Ebert-Straße. The central station is on your left. Here you can reach all relevant bus lines and trains.
