Mayor-Smidt-Memorial

The memorial statue located on the former Market Square is dedicated to the founder of Bremerhaven.

The Mayor of Bremen Johann Smidt (1773-1857) was the founder of „Bremer Haven" (Bremen Harbor). After complicated negotiations with the Kingdom of Hanover, he bought a piece of land on the right side of the River Weser north of the Geeste estuary. This was the first seed for today's Bremerhaven.

The memorial statue located on the Theodor-Heuss-Platz was designed by the sculptor Werner Stein (1855-1930) from Leipzig and was inaugurated on September 12th, 1888.
Theodor-Heuss-Platz was originally the market square of Bremerhaven (as of 1827).
