Before the railway came to Bremerhaven

In the pre-railway era, transportation between Bremen and Bremerhaven was mostly by river barge, taking two or three days on average. Sometimes, paddle steamers plying the river after 1817 were used to tow the barges. The trip by horse cart took about seven hours around 1850. A highway between Bremen and Bremerhaven was completed in 1834, and in the same year a regular steamship service was established between the two cities.
