"Bonn" - Task force supply ships

At the "Seaside City Festival Bremerhaven 2017" the task force supply ships "Bonn" is taking part

Taking part in the SeeStadtFest – Landgang Bremerhaven 2017 is the Einsatzgruppenversorger "Bonn". With its 174 meters length the BONN is one of the biggest ships of the German Navy, together with its sister ships "Berlin" and "Frankfurt am Main". The "Bonn" has a width of 24 meters and a height of 44 meters. The supply vessel has two 20.000 PS strong diesel engines, which are supposed to speed up the 7.000 tons of curb weight up to 20 knots.

Brought into service in September 2013, the homeport of the "Bonn" is in Wilhelmshaven. The crew consists out of 170 men and is under the leadership of the lieutenant commander Jobst Berg. Usually, they are not on sight though. In 2016, the BONN was taking part in the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 in the Mediterranean Sea as well as comparable deployment in the Aegean Sea. The crew of the "Bonn" did their share in the fight against smugglers in the Mediterranean Sea. In addition the supply vessel was the flag ship of the international association under the leadership of the Commodore Jörg Klein and performed several maneuver and training with other NATO-nations.

One of the main tasks as a supply vessel is to supply other ships. The "Bonn" can bunker up to 9000 cubic meter of fuel, 230 tons of groceries and 100 tons of other goods in up to 70 storing positions for containers. At sea, these will be dispensed in so called “supplying maneuvers” to other vessels. With a space for up to 239 crew members, the "Bonn" can be used as a operation center, can accommodate helicopters or can be a swimming military hospital.

In 2017, the "Bonn" took part in several international maneuvers. During spring the supply vessel did some Joint Warrior trainings with the South African frigate GOOD HOPE in the Baltic Sea around the Scottish coast. After the SeeStadtFest – Landgang Bremerhaven it’s time for the BONN to cast off. For the maneuver “Baltops”, the "Bonn" is taking part in the training with almost 50 other units out of a dozen nations in the Baltic Sea.
