"Kathrin" - Sailing ship

Replica of the Norwegian rescue boat "Vardo"

The „Kathrin“ is a round about 15%  smaller replica of the Norwegian rescue boat “Vardo”. The “Vardo” was built in 1909 from the ship designer Colin Archer in his own shipyard based in Larvik/Norway. From 1909 until 1948 it was used from the Norwegian “Redningsselkapet” (comparable with the German Association for Rescuing Castaways) as a “Redningsskoyta (rescue boat). Until 1941 it was on duty under sails, after that it was put under construction to add an engine. A self-made modification of the “Kathrin” happened from 1977 to 1984. The hulk is made out of “Ferro Coment”. The ship wasn’t made out of wood, because the material costs would have been way too high. In addition, the building material is not as high maintenance as wood. Between 1998 and 2004 the interior fittings was completely redone and the present deck out of Ferro Coment got replaced with a wood deck.
