Twin City Grimsby/North East Lincolnshire
Founded in the 9th century by the Danes, the settlement developed from the original Grim’s by (Grim’s village) to a busy fishing and trade port in the 12th century. In the 15th century, the steady silting-up of the harbour led to a long economic decline. Then, in the 19th century, the port was developed and the increasing trade brought renewed growth and prosperity to the town. By the beginning of the 20th century, Grimsby was England’s most important fishing port. |
But Grimsby has also undergone changes since then. Like Bremerhaven, it has seen fishing decline. While it still has a fishing industry, food processing, renewable energy, pharmaceutical and petrochemical companies have become increasingly important. Grimsby and Bremerhaven were twinned on 22 February 1963. There is a regular exchange of school pupils and close contacts between the fire brigades and police forces of the two towns.
Grimsby lies on the river Humber in the north of England and is approx. 1,255km from Bremerhaven.
The rectification of boundaries in 1996 created the Unitary Authority of North East Lincolnshire in the Yorkshire and Humber region. Apart from Grimsby, it includes the towns of Aylesby, Ashby cum Fenby, Barnoldby le Beck, Beelsby, Bradley, Brigsley, Cleethorpes, East Ravendale, Habrough, Hatcliffe, Healing, Humberston, Immingham, Irby upon Humber, Laceby, New Waltham, Nunsthorpe, Old Clee, Pyewipe, Scartho, Stallingborough, Waltham, West Marsh and Wold Newton.
Impressions
The town also hosts the Fishing Heritage Museum and Grimsby Town Hall, both of which are open to visitors.
Another twin town of North East Lincolnshire (Grimsby) is Königswinter Königswinter.
