German Maritime Museum

Leibniz Institute for Maritime History

Ships can be places of longing, knowledge repositories and much more. Without ships, our world would be a different place. Because ships move - people and goods, ideologies and information. They are witnesses of time, silent and communicative at the same time. That is why the German Maritime Museum (DSM) / Leibniz Institute of Maritime History tells their history and illustrates the relationship between man and the sea in the permanent and in many special exhibitions.
Currently, the DSM is embarking on a new course: parts of the building are being renovated and combined with a comprehensive redesign of all exhibition and research areas. Still on display is the heart of the house: the cog from 1380 - a shipwreck with its own exciting history. The permanent exhibition rolls up the stages from construction to salvage to conservation of the medieval merchant ship, considered the best preserved of its kind in the world. Guests also learn interesting facts about the Hanseatic era. It is supplemented by changing special exhibitions in the cog hall.
The harbor tug STIER, the whaler RAU IX and the deep-sea salvage tug SEEFALKE are moored in the museum harbor and can be visited during the summer season. The current opening hours can be found at www.dsm.museum.
